Two Leaves.

Hi,

It's has been such a long time since I updated this blog. Forgive me for my absence as I was very ill and couldn't have time to update this. Thankfully, I have since recovered and hope to continue to create beautiful artwork. ;)

Here is a WIP. "Two Leaves". When i started drawing at a very young age, i loved to draw muscular superheroes, such as Dragonballs Z or the Incredible Hulk. As i grew bored drawing males, i try to draw female characters. However, i find it very difficult to capture the pose and the personality of females.

Recently I came across an article by Jean Giraud aka Moebius, a french legendary comics artist, who explained why; "Drawing a man is very different from drawing a woman. With males, you can be looser and less precise in their depiction; small imperfections can often add character. Your drawing of a woman, however, must be perfect; a single ill-placed line can dramatically age her or make her seem annoying or ugly. Then, no one buys your comic!" ~ “Breve manual para historietistas”, a lecture by Moebius to aspiring cartoonists, published in Mexican newspapers, La Jornada, 1996.

I still have lots to learn. :)

365 Days of Sketches: Number #140

Hi

Recently, I have been busy trying adapt to some transitions, hence the lack of updates. I hope to continue to post more artwork and useful information about arts.

Thank you for following my artwork.

Here's 365 Days of Sketches: Number #140! I felt that personally there is some breakthrough in my painting approach. I can see some improvements in the texture of the skin. Hopefully, I can build on this and continue to improve in other aspect of portraits.

2013 Studio Joshlab End Of Year Report

Happy New Year to all of you!

At the end of the year I will give a brief report of what I have accomplished or failed to accomplished for the entire year. Hopefully, I can make it as interesting as possible.

2013 has been a rather productive year here at Studio Joshlab. Throughout the entire year I have been quite consistently producing new artworks and gradually improving the older concept artworks. There are some major highlights in 2013 and I will briefly mention them as we go.

Highlights

  • March 2013 - Launched JADA: a Private illustration tutorship
  • March 2013 - Submitted design for Threadles T-Shirt.
  • May 2013 - Expanded teaching portfolio to sculpting for Children
  • May 2013 - Started producing artworks for Children's Church.
  • August 2013 - Launched The Joshlab Bulletin.
  • October 2013 - Launched Studio Joshlab skateboard, magnets and buttons designs.
  • November 2013 - Launched "Food for Tees" BETA via SnapTee platform.
  • December 2013 - Released 1st book <WORLD OF A-MAO 阿毛日记>

Started JADA: a Private illustration tutorship (MARCH)
It has been a while since the idea of a private one-on-one tutorship on my mind. The purpose of this one-on-one tutorship, a 10 weeks course which I curated; hopes to benefit poorer students and working adults who does not have the time and finances to attend a formal school training.

Teaching sculpting and various art classes to Children (MAY)
In collaboration with Artoons and KRTC, I was given opportunity to teach clay sculpting, create origami and paper toys, etc. to children. It was a fantastic time seeing the children sculpt clay for their very first time. I will continue to do so in 2014, and hopefully more classes to come.

Started painting for Children's Church (MAY)
Also in May, I was given the opportunity to paint Bible Stories for Children's Church. It was a real tight month, with quite a hectic schedule and tight deadlines.

Launched The Joshlab Bulletin (AUGUST)
In August, I trial test an ebulletin gathering sources and information which I see beneficial to the arts community, especially to the growing artists. So far the content themselves has been wonderful, thanks to the remarkable platform from Paper.li. I suppose it was usefull judging from the 35 online readers who shared.

Launched Skateboard, magnets and buttons designs (OCTOBER)
As I had mentioned on the post, I'm always on the look out for more ways to create outstanding products for the markets without compromising the details. It's been on my mind to produce more products. That has finally been realize, More products other the the one at Society6[LINK] are been added. The link to the skateboard, magnets and buttons are here: http://www.cafepress.com/joshlab

Launched Food for Tees BETA via SnapTee (NOVEMBER)
This year, I added additional asset to my workstation, and it allow me to acess SnapTee platform. "Food for Tees" is a brand new concept from the Studio Joshlab fold. It aims to create illustrations from delicious food. I will work hard to make it even better in 2014.

Released 1st book <WORLD OF A-MAO 阿毛日记> (DECEMBER)
Finally, after several years since A-Mao was created, I have manages to find the right person who can help me with the Mandarin language. I'm also glad that all the shipments and publishing went well. If there is something I would change, I will probably add more pages in the the book. However, I may have plans for a second book in 2014-2015. Please do keep a look out!

So that's it for now, wishing all of you a healthy, joyous and prosperous new year ahead!
