Easter Egg Painting 2013

This weekend I'm celebrating Easter day! I got to hang out with some friends and we had an easter egg painting at the Singapore Botanic Gardens. It was very easy to paint and enjoyable. The whole process only takes 2 hours inclucive of the preparations. The preparation was no hassle - you just need eggs, the brushes and the paints.

UCP with Aries Zulkarnain and Elim Chew @ SODE

On the 23rd March, I have got the privilege to attend an up-close and personal, 2 hours session with Aries Zulkarnain and Elim Chew held at City College, organized by the cool people at SODE. Aries Zulkarnain is the director of a successful multi-million dollar family owned business in Jakarta, Indonesia. He is also the co-founder of Tarpa brand.

Elim Chew is the founder of the street wear brand, 77th Street. She has been a part of many on-going community campaigns. Elim also sat in over 20 committees. She chaired and co-chaired several public service, youth and community groups including the Programming Committee for *scape. *scape was an iconic youth community space for free expressions supported by MCYS and National Youth Council of Singapore (NYC) and Action Community for Entrepreneurship (ACE) of Ministry of Trade and Industry. She was a member on the Board of Trustees, Entrepreneurship Committee and Investment Committee at the National University of Singapore. She got the award for the most Promising Woman Entrepreneur in 2001 by the Singapore Association of Small and Medium Enterprises

I learnt alot from the both of them. Their passion for business and how it's so important to connect with the people we meet.

Some of the quotes that impacted me, from the session:
"As much as possible, there should be minimum expenditure when starting business - if possible spend none at all."

"Whether we are running, having a meal; always comes back with an idea."

Quoted by Aries Zulkarnain, "Maximised collisions by accelerating serendipity." ~ Tony Hsieh, Founder of Zappos

"Never have illusions, so that we will not have disillusions. Because if I get disllusions, i'll soon lose sight of my life and visions."

Perhaps one of the  best question ever ask that day, was raised by Aries Zulkarnain

"Can you start out in life pursuing audacious ventures, or do you need to build reputation, relationships & resources first?"

"I think everybody who creates something is doing something audacious. Because the most difficult time is when you are starting from scratch with no financial backing--just an idea. So true audaciousness comes about with just thosepeople who have the pluck and the courage to say, "Screw it; let's do it." ~ Sir Richard Branson shared by Pst Aries. Thank you all for voting CITIZENS OF THE STREET. In the end, it was a real fun time for my 1st submission.

Total score is 329. Out of which 17 was graded 5 points, while the rest of the 101 voters give 1 points each. Not bad for the 1st try.

There'll most definitely be more to come.

JADA: Private Digital Illustration/Painting Course

What is JADA:
JADA is simply a one-on-one private digital drawing/illustration/painting course. It is a means through which people from all walks of life, young and old can experience and learn to create arts. 3 reasons make the difference between JADA and the rest of the courses out there:

1. The one-on-one approach. Every session will be only the teacher and the student.
2. Comfort of their own home. Students will get to practise creating art at the comfort of their very own home.
3. Small scale, hence small investment. As the course is conducted in such a way, the expenses will also be minimize.

I had been a freelance illustrator and has been creating artworks for more than 7 years. I also has some experience in teaching drawings and illustrations to various primary schools with classes averaging 30 pupils each, I have also received awards and features from:

1. 2nd Runners Up winner in Mangaka 07; a Singapore digital arts competition.
2. Top 10 Designs for Tote Bag design Competition 2010
3. Culturepush:
4. ImagineFX Issue 86 DVD FXPose Gallery
5. Publications in Aspiring Mangaka & Writers' Club 2nd Anthology (2010)

I obtained education in arts and design from Egg Story Digital Arts Academy in Certification in 2D Traditional Animation and in Digital Painting, also with FZD School of Design in Certification in Dynamic Sketching and in Concept Drawing.

The course is spread to 10 weeks. One lesson each week and each lesson will be taught in 2 hours. The lesson plan are as follows:

Week 1 and 2: Foundation. Students will learn about the anatomy of the animal creatures, humans, vehicles, etc. what are the different lightings on the object, how to create forms of the creature or humans, etc.

Week 3 and 4: Concept Design. Students will learn about different way of doing research for the concepts of characters, backgrounds and sceneries. How the characters of their stories can relate back to the culture and background. They will also learnt to generate ideas to come out of creative designs and unqiue personality.

Week 5 and 6: Perspectives. Students will learn more the principles of perspective such as the different eye views, how to plot the perspective of different views and to avoid mistakes. They will also understand the rules of composition and contrast, and how we see with our eyes.

Week 7 and 8: Digital Paintings. Students will learn the methodology of painting using digital devices. The principles of color theories, values, moods, etc.

Week 9 and 10: Portfolio Presentation. Students will get to understand the different portfolio approaches to present to schools and clients. Students will be given additional references for further studies, how to find their own styles, and what are the mistakes to avoid when approaching clients for work, etc.

What students need to know.
- Students are not required to have any experience in arts or design, however, it would be great if you have some artworks that you have done previously so that I can judge the skills you may already have.
-  Students would require to have a tablet for drawing and painting(either Bamboo or WACOM would suffice.)
- Students can choose whether they would like to learn to create characters, vehicles, creatures or environment.
- Students will be given various resources which will help in their creative and aesthetic developments.
- Students will be tasked to complete exercise which they had learn from the course.
-  Students also are required to have their own art materials such as pen, pencil, sketch book, a tablet, PC or laptop.

So how much:
As mention, the course is spread to 10 weeks. One lesson each week and each lesson will be taught in 2 hours. The cost of the total course is 800 Singapore dollars only. Students are required to pay at least half of the total amount before the start of the course. Students also are required to have their own art materials such as pen, pencil, sketch book, a tablet, PC or laptop.

I won't promise that you will be superstar artist overnight. However, you'll definitely save yourself lots of time & money going round in circles, trying to find the answer. You will not need to bang your head onto walls as much as I did trying to find the solution. With the approach of this course, students will not be afraid or shy to ask questions and will be encouraged to ask whenever in doubt. With the coaching done right in the comfort home, the student can save more time and money traveling around. The course is also cater for working adults who might want to learn arts but do not have the time to do it. They may like to learn for leisure or recreation above their tight commitments and busy schedules.

JADA is the right solution to bridge the individual to the arts and design.

You may contact me at for more information.

Thank you.

Joshua Tay.
